MidiBox Sid

The SID chip is hands down the best “synth on a chip” ever created by man. And the MIDIBox SID is and incredibly powerful synth that utilizes the SID chip. So far, I’ve started two seperated MIDIBox SID projects, only one of which is completed.

I started on a custom design based on the MIDIBox SID v2.0. on ucapps.de. I ran into a couple snags and about that time, I found out about the sammichSID. (You can find out more about the sammichSID here.) Of course I had to order a kit, which I imediately completed as you can see in the picture above.

I’ll post more on the other MIDIBox SID later. For now, pics of my progress are below.

UPDTATE 6/8/2010:
So, the reason I had set this asside was a power supply issue that, for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out. After having this sucker sit for months, I picked it up again while wait on some parts for my 505. With a fresh pair of eyes, I immediately found the problem and fixed it. I’m calling it quits on this for tonight, but with any luck, soon enough I’ll have an MB SID with a full blown control surface.

UPDATE 6/15/2010:
I’m currently uploading the firmware for the first core. Here’s proof of my partial success.

UPDATE 11/19/2012:
I finally got around to finishing this project. I’ll dig up my camera and record some samples of this wonderful beast sometime this week.

UPDATE 12/5/2012:
I finished this project as of Sunday night. (I needed to replace one of the SIDs, so I ordered a couple SwinSIDs from a guy in Germany to add some more variation.) I pulled everything out of storage and started work on this again a few weeks ago. It’s finally complete, and sounds fantastic!

For the control surface, I followed the wiring guides found here and here. I won’t include a picture of the resulting insanity because anyone trying to follow what I did wouldn’t be able to make sense of it anyway. (It’s kind of a rat’s nest.)
