My first introduction to techno came through a fascination with DJ culture while I was in high school. I had a healthy appetite for hip hop back then and used to dream of scratching and mixing hip hop. I bought a few techno records at a local shop where I used to frequently buy hip hop cuts. I had no idea what I was getting into.
A few years later, while I was training for the military I got re-introduced to techno through a friend and picked up a couple mix CDs from the PX on post. Six months later I got orders stating I was going to be stationed in Germany, near Frankfurt. The rest, as they say, is history. Shortly after arriving in Germany I attended my first rave, called the ‘Tunnel Rave’ in Darmstadt where the city closed off a tunnel that went right through the middle of downtown and the big local trance club set up shop. Nothing like that would ever happen in the US. Many crazy, club-hopping weekends later I bought my first set of turntables and club-hopping turned into record shopping.
Not satisfied with only being able to play other people’s music I bought a copy of Cubasis, a cheap Casio keyboard with midi and my first synth a Korg EA1. Shortly thereafter I picked up a Korg ER1 to match my synth. I haven’t looked back, and my gearlust still festers. The music on this website is the result of that gearlust and enfatuation with european techno.
